In this column I pose questions and raise issues. I don't always agree with the conclusion, implied or stated. The purpose is to put a slightly different spin on each item and to promote discussion.

  • It was really clever of President Bush to counter the threat of deflation with steps to drastically increase the price of oil. Of course, now there may be a new inflationary recession to deal with, but that's just the price you gotta pay to avoid a deflationary recession.
  • Most American corporations punish integrity.
  • America is reeling from record high gasoline prices. Given the extent to which our government subsidizes oil with strategic military bases and periodic wars in the Gulf, the real price we pay, though not reflected at the pump, is much higher.
  • Is it time for a "manly movement"?
  • American activists have focused, during the past 30 years, so intently on consumer issues that the corporate aristocrats have encountered relatively little resistance in their assault upon the working caste.
  • Feminism is so junior high.
  • Men like to look at attractive women. Big duh! But it's women who have, in this post-feminist era, reduced mate selection to survival of the sexiest. Back in the bad old days of the American "patriarchy," mate selection had far more to do with virtues, intelligence and personality than it does today.
  • Does a first-strike war against Iraq serve the interests of the American people? So far, President Bush has only been able to demonstrate that it serves the interests of some American multinational corporations. Corporations, it might be noted, which claim they have no patriotic obligations to the American people.
  • People with Asperger Disorder often misunderstand the body language of normal people. But then normal people also often misunderstand the body language of people with Asperger Disorder.
  • What does our culture call a battered husband? "Pussy whipped."
  • If, as proponents of war with Iraq contend, this is not about oil but about enforcing the terms and conditions of Desert Storm, then what were we doing there in the first place? Defending Kuwait. Why do we care about Kuwait? Because of oil.
  • Feminists have persuaded America that men are rapists and violent by nature. The unanticipated result of this is that, expecting the worst from men, many women now seek out the worst of men.
  • Many women get very angry with men who do not live down to their expectations.
  • According to psychologist Albert Mehrabian, "Only 7 percent of the meaning of what people say comes across in the words they choose." Yet, in modern right think, men are required to interpret meaning based solely on the words a woman uses, while women are free to ignore men's words and intuit any meaning they feel like.
  • Men are "afraid to commit," while women are "waiting for the perfect man."
