What's happening?

Michigan state Representative Jerry Boggs published an article in the Detroit News, December 19, 1996, called, "Following the Rules Courts Disaster." Jerry covers the topic of how dating games are played and whether or not women should ask men out for a date.

One interesting finding that he quotes is, "Both traditional and nontraditional men perceive women who ask for dates as kinder, warmer, more thoughtful and less selfish than women who do not ask for dates." You can find the full text of Jerry's article at our web site. Click on the Reading Room, and then look for the article.

In December, letter writers wrote PC Magazine to protest their listings for the 1,000 best sites on the Internet (January 1997 issue). Their female editor included a number of radical feminist sites, but no sites dealing with men's issues.

It should be noted that this caught the eye of other men's organizations on the Internet who also wrote. And, it should be noted that what PC Magazine did in that issue was a departure from their standard practice. Typically, they ignore gender issue sites. But this time they decided to take sides in politics. We recommend you choose another publication. PC World, for example, is a very sophisticated consumer advocate.

Prostate Cancer Coalition

Here is something we can all help with. The National Prostate Cancer Coalition (in Association with participating chapters of the American Cancer Society) is trying to circulate a petition to the US government to make Prostate Cancer a priority. They want to raise a million signatures by the third week in September. The National Prostate Cancer Coalition is a group of Prostate Cancer survivors (phone number below) and their loved ones. Until last week, they had never heard of the men's/father's movement and had made little or no use of the Internet.

This is not a men's movement project per se, but we can be a major help if we do some of the things suggested below.

You can help - Post this petition prominently at your web site if you have one. Print it out and get others to sign it. Sign it yourself and mail it in.

Share it with any mailing lists that you can. Post it in newsgroups. There must be 10,000 of them.

NOTE: The third week in September is National Prostate Cancer Week. You can get a whole packet of information by contacting the NPCC at the address or phone number at the end of this form.
