Book Review "Deadbeat Dads"

by Bob Hirschfeld, J.D.

This morning, at the grocery store, I spotted a paperback surely in need of review:
"DEADBEAT DADS" copyright 1996 by Carl J. Hoffman, Pocket Books, div. of Simon & Schuster Inc.,ISBN 0-671-52984-6
Author Hoffman is apparently a collections skip-tracer located right here in my State of Arizona.

Full of sneering nastiness about "your deadbeat dad" (he is after all having a conversation only with women because of the title), the book seems to contain a great deal of accurate, useful information on skip tracing, filing for support, executing on judgments, exempting support obligations from bankruptcy, blackmailing delinquent payors by threats of publicity or damage to credit ratings, state and national enforcement resources, etc.

This book is useful to Dads in three ways:

  1. Learning what a non-payor is up against;
  2. Learning how to collect from "Deadbeat Mothers" who owe support, but more usefully;
  3. Applying the skip-tracing techniques to finding mothers who have absconded with the kids.
I hate to line this guy's pocket. Maybe you should look the book up in the library instead of spending the $5.99 grocery store list price.
