Picketing First Wives Club

by Dave Usher

Our picketing of "First Wives Club" in St. Louis has been very well recieved, and well covered by the media. We were portrayed very positively by the media and were the lead story (more important than the bomb scare at McDonnell Douglas) This is the first time I have seen media people happily acknowledge the existence of a real fathers rights movement on the air.

Some of you know that Hard Copy interviewed us extensively. They got interested in it because of so many calls they got out in L.A. Their producer was on our side, and even moved the broadcast date from Thursday to Tuesday to get it out before Paramount caught on. But Paramount caught up with it, and killed the segment only two hours before broadcast on Tuesday, because they "dont want any bad publicity".

This, friends, is Censorship of the most sexist kind. But now, it is a hotter issue because Paramount has now alienated the entire media .... who seriously hate censorship.

Today, TIME Magazine called me. They are doing a major story on First Wives Club. I did two other interviews today on it as well. This is a red-hot issue, and we can be more than a national cover story if we all do a stupid little picket.

I am thoroughly convinced we have a solid issue of sexism that we can make big points with. The tremendous volume of emails from fathers out there tell me that there is a lot of hearty anger over this movie. We are not alone. I even got a very positive email back from Focus on the Family about our picket here.

There isn't anyone except a few feminists with their pants down who oppose us. They are in a very bad spot now.

We do have the support of media insiders, both men and women, who have personally told me that they are on our side. All we have to do is create a scene to make our issue cover story material.

This can bring about significant change in mass attitudes towards men and also gender relationships. This is crucial if we want to change the court system. This is crucial in burying feminist legislation. It is all ready to explode, and all we have to do is light the fuse. The time is here, and the time is now.

All we need to do to look real good, get national coverage, and scare the daylights out of Paramount is to have the First International Fathers Picket. I have contacts in the national media to make all this happen.

The key to this is not the number of folks in any one location. The key is that it happens in a LOT of places. (I call this the "Alice's Restaurant" principle). That makes it a "mass uprising" that will attract national media, and blast Paramount out of the water (they will get hit by media from the front and theater owners from the rear).

If we all do this, we will make network new on probably every network, and get a lot of play on the soft news shows as well. I have connections out in LA to get us national coverage. Just 90 guys total, picketing in 30 locations, is all we need to get a ton of national coverage and bring sexism to the front of national debate.

Why?

Why must we all do this? Because sexism is the attitude problem that leads to every problem we face. We change the attitude, we win in the long run. Read what both David Blankenhorn and Warren Farrell have told us about the necessity of changing mass attitudes towards men. Sexism is not a funny thing. It is a bad thing. We now have a golden opportunity to change all that.

If you are pissed about the Elizabeth Morgan bill, the anti-stalking bill, the "moveaway" decisions in New York and California, drivers' license revocations, child support legislation, circumcision, visitation, custody, State Farm Insurance, or any other recent topic of recent digust, then you better be pissed at sexist attitudes first. That is why all these things have happened. Sexism is the attitude we have to change before anything else will change.

I have been told by a trusty person in the film industry that if we do this it will scare the holy hell out of Hollywood. What better way to spend one hour on a Saturday night than blowing sexism and hate of men out of the water?

To the couple of naysayers out there: Don't bother wasting your time telling me this won't work. If you can't get off your sorry butt and do something, I don't need to hear from you. I have positive proof that this sort of thing works ... it is called N.O.W. All we need is 90 guys in 30 locations to make a major impact.

Picket instructions

Nnot legal advice, but I have never had any problem in 6 years of active picketing:
  1. Stay on the sidewalk, next to the street, on "public property". Don't picket in the street.

  2. If there is no sidewalk, walk a strip of grass within 3 feet of the street pavement.

  3. Don't go into any mall parking areas or into a mall.

  4. Pick a theater that has an appropriate area where you are in sight of the theatre, or within camera shot of the theatre sign.

  5. If the theatre is ON the street, don't picket right in front of the theatre. Picket across the street or on one side of it.

  6. Try to position yourself so the maximum number of people driving by can see you.

  7. Don't block or cross any driveways or entranceways as you picket, or restrict pedestrian traffic in any way.

  8. Keep walking in an elongated circle (so they can't accuse you of loitering or vagrancy).

  9. Don't stop to talk to anyone unless they are with the media.

  10. If some bimbette tries to start an unfriendly conversation, ignore her and keep on walking.

  11. Every person should have $20 on them and a drivers license.

  12. Try to wear decent clothes, and don't have beer on the breath.

  13. If asked to move by an officer of the law or security guard, don't mess with them unless you know what you are doing. Just move to a different spot as they request.

  14. Smile for the camera; don’t look like death eating a cracker.

  15. If you are presently involved in family litigation, check with your lawyer first.

  16. Don't bring small kids or babies. Get a sitter.

  17. Don't put your signs on sticks. They look threatening, and can be used as a weapon. Carry them.

  18. Think "Martin Luther King", and don't do anything he wouldn't do.

  19. Get there at least 15 minutes early so you don't miss the media. They will not wait for you.

  20. Make sure the cameras get shots of a sign with your local phone number on it. You get lots of members that way.

  21. Be very nice to theatre folks if you happen to talk to them. They are not your enemy. You want them to like you and support our cause. Paramount is the target.

Interview hints

  1. Never mention even one word about your case or personal situation. The issue of sexism is why you are there. If they ask, just tell them "My situation is no different than a few million other guys across America". If you waste your time talking about your own personal misery, you wont do anything except convince folks you are a sicko angry male.

  2. Pick your most "knowedgeable" one or two guys for interview. All others are instructed to NOT TALK TO THE MEDIA ... tell them to politely decline and send them to you. This is VERY IMPORTANT. If the media isn't warm to our issue, they will take the dumbest thing some pissed off newbee says and put it on the air or in the paper, and you will look like bozos.

  3. "Face guys" wear suits and look sharp. Have comb and hairspray if necessary so you look like Ted Koppel.

  4. Some interviewers want "feeling", and won't leave you alone until you emote. This calls for an ad-lib to fit the moment. Stay away from words like "angry". Statements with a little feeling, like "I am scared for the futures of our children" are great.

  5. What you say must be said in 8 second sound bites. Practice this if necessary. You have at most two breaths per question to say it.

  6. The interviewer will ask you questions like listed below. Try the suggested answers if you can't think of anything else you like better.

  7. This interview mentions "racism" in comparison with sexism. DO NOT MENTION A RACE IN PARTICULAR. Leave race "generic."

Probably questions and recommended sound bites

Q. Why are you out here?

A. "First Wives" is the most sexist movie to ever come out of Hollywood. Sexism hurts every man and woman in our community, destroying the relationships between men and women, husbands and wives.

Q. So, why is it bad?

A. The only difference between sexism and racism is the object for hate. We must now recognize the simple truth that sexism destroys healthy relationships between men and women, and results in the sky-high divorce rates we see today.

Q. Why do you think this movie is sexist?

A. It puts men and women in a hyper-sexist gender war, portraying men as louts and women subsequently justified in seeking revenge in just about every illegal way possible.

Q. So what is wrong with that?

A. There is plenty wrong with anyone kidnapping, enslaving, and blackmailing someone, and especially alienating children from their father and then calling it funny.

Q. So what is wrong with sexism?

A. Sexism flows through our daily lives, leading men and women straight to divorce court. This has left more women and children in poverty, and more men outside the family, than at any time in the history of modern civilization.

Q. Come on, what is wrong with a little humor?

A. If you substitute any race, pick any race, for the sexist roles in this movie, and you will find out why in a hurry.

Q. Have you seen the movie?

A. (If no): I don't need to see it. There is a flood of mail on the Internet from folks who think this movie is sexist. Need I say more? A. (If yes): (Up to you).

Q. Why are you trying to stop people from seeing the movie?

A. We want people to see this movie. It is a marvelous educational opportunity for folks to understand how ugly sexism is, and how it carries through society, in hurting relationships between men and women. (Read: We are not censors like Paramount is: we want people to learn about the perversity of sexism)

Q. So what is your feeling, here.

A. (Say with feeling) I am really scared for the futures of our children. If we fail to end sexist attitudes so everpresent in America, our children will face far more divorce, illegitimacy, and all the problems that go with it, than do we.
