The Great Reset: Will You be Happy?
By Rod Van Mechelen

2020 Olympia, WA -- A day is coming when most tasks can be performed by machines. Automation will eliminate most jobs. When that happens, there will be more people than jobs to occupy them.

Men, unoccupied by productive pursuits and in need of the means to support themselves and their families, generally become bandits, thieves, revolutionaries who destroy that which does not feed, clothe and shelter them and their families. To maintain the status quo, must they be eliminated before they wreak havoc?

Enter the Titans
In his 2015 novel, Departure, A.G. Riddle writes of global billionaires who band together as "Titans" to reshape the global civilization in their own image. Have Bill Gates, George Soros, Klaus Schwab, Al Gore and others modeled themselves as real life versions of Riddle's Titans? They're certainly intent on reshaping civilization.

In Riddle's book, the Titans unleash a pandemic that kills most of the global population. But these real life Titans, perhaps anticipating the rise of automation and the end of work, have ceased upon a not very deadly virus to have it declared a pandemic requiring destruction of our current economy through soft quarantines to prevent it from spreading. Control thus imposed, can discontent be prevented with a Universal Basic Income (UBI) and Beyond Meat?

A soft quarantine is one in which the activities of healthy people are severely restricted in the name of public health. But the outcome is not the end of the virus, which continues to mutate and spread, but the collapse of an economy in which most of the labor is provided by people.

The New Leisure Class
As automation replaces people to provide virus-free labor, most people on UBI will succumb to moral hazard and turn into unproductive consumers: a new leisure class. There will be some who will rebel against this and seek to educate and engage themselves in productive pursuits. Most, however, will embrace this life without work.

Of them Schwab proclaimed, "You'll own nothing and you'll be happy." Happy, perhaps, but not free to live with meaning. Theirs will be meaningless lives. And after the basic requirements of survival, people require meaning.

Meaningful Lives?
In the Matrix trilogy, Neo is informed that previous iterations of the Matrix were utopias that failed because humans require struggle. There is a truth in that: the price of meaning is to strive. Absent effort to achieve, boredom sets in. Without effort, there is no meaning, no purpose served by being.

But in a world in which machines perform most of the tasks, what are people to do? Most are not suited for intellectual pursuits. Where will they turn for meaning? Religion? Causes? Video games?

My tribal ancestors were known as "the spirit seeking people." They sought meaning through contemplation, vision quests, sometimes through gambling, other times through banditry and war.

Meaning requires challenges.

The False Narratives
There are no single answers I can provide to these questions, but I question whether the right or best one is a Great Reset to impose Communism 3.0 as a mechanism for the Titans to enlist the aid of Progressives to impose their plutocratic control.

The world is bigger than their ability to control it. Bigger than the false narratives they have promoted to justify their efforts.

There is no overpopulation. The entire population of the world could fit in a suburb the size of Texas and California combined. There is no human caused climate emergency caused by CO2 emissions. The CO2 emissions of the entire human population register as barely a blip compared to nature's emissions, such as from volcanoes. Oceans are not acidifying, ozone holes are not growing, coral reefs are not facing extinction.

Yes, human industries are polluting, and that's a bad thing, but the answer for the west has been to export polluting industries to China when a better answer is to discard the scientific theories based on conquering nature, and revert to the sciences and technologies that work with nature.

Such as the science and technolgies of Nikola Tesla and Nikolai Kozyrev in physics, the agriculture of the Indigenous Americans, and so on. These work with nature.

Beyond Meat is not working with nature. Depriving humans of meaning is not working with nature. Fake pandemics are not working with nature. Imposing Communism 3.0 through a Great Reset is not working with nature.

The Titans are stuck in paradigm of conquest striving to subvert an experiment that was begun almost 300 years ago to create a nation based upon unleashing human potential through guaranteeing the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Happiness. Meaning. These cannot be achieved through a Great Reset. When Schwab said you'll own nothing and you'll be happy, what he really meant is you'll owe nothing and briefly be relieved. But what comes after cannot by any measure be considered happy.
